One of those is Anna Bay mother of four Bernadette Marrone who gained entry into a bachelor of nursing after completing open foundation in 2011.
She was awarded the Raymond Terrace Business Association's sponsored grant and a council spokesperson said it was a great accomplishment for the mum who was on her way to realising her dream to be a nurse.
Other recipients included, Joy Hadfield of Medowie, Dean Pike of Corlette, Josh Mann of Raymond Terrace, Adam Raferty of Corlette, Prudence Jones of Raymond Terrace and Shoal Bay resident and past Merewether High student Reid Butler.
Mr Reid is studying a Bachelor of Communication at Griffith University by correspondence while he works the graveyard shift as a producer in Sydney's Channel 9 newsroom.
"His career goal is to be on the road, reporting the latest news as a broadcast journalist," the spokesperson said.
It is the third year the scholarships have been handed out and this year the cash was donated by Port businesses including Volgren, Amp Control, Communication Port Stephens and the Raymond Terrace Business Association, to name a few.
Port mayor Bob Westbury said recipients were carefully judged.
