Another step to $300m gas plant

01 Jun, 2011 12:00 AM
THE next phase towards the development of a $300 million gas plant at Tomago has been given the seal of approval.

Port Stephens Council recently approved work for the clearing of trees off Old Punt Road. It will allow energy giant AGL to survey the site for its planned gas storage complex.

The proposed centre will regularly convert 30,000 tonnes of natural gas into liquified natural gas or LNG. More than 300 jobs are likely be created when the project is operating. AGL spokeswoman Karen Winsbury said the plant would allow for additional security of gas supply for customers.

"It will enable us to meet our local customers' peak gas requirements over winter and provide additional security of gas supply," she said.

The initial work will help prepare an environmental impact statement.

Is this the same beautiful Port Stephens that has recently had TV advertising coverage. Oh well I won't be visiting.
