Avoiding conflict of interest could cost Port Stephens Council $5000

10 Mar, 2010 10:21 AM
APPOINTING two independent experts to help decide the future of council owned land at Salamander Bay could cost up to $5000.

Development applications (DAs) with a value of more than $10 million must go before a State Government appointed panel of four people, including two local councillors.

A report from council head planner David Broyd said depending on time needed for briefings, site inspections and hourly rate, the cost of engaging two experts could range from $4000 to $5000.

Port Stephens Mayor Bruce MacKenzie and Deputy Mayor Bob Westbury were appointed to the panel but a conflict of interest, as owners of the land, caused the NSW Government to request the independent members.
