Big vegies no secret

30 Jun, 2010 12:00 AM
PARENTS would have trouble convincing their children to eat these vegies.

The 10 kilogram sweet potato and 20 kilogram pumpkin are just two of a number of giant vegetables recently produced by Salt Ash farmer Monty Bull.

The massive sweet potato is one of nine which grew to an extra large size, while only one pumpkin outgrew all the rest.

Mr Bull said he had no idea what had caused the vegetables to grow so large.

"I planted them in spring and didn't do anything special to them," he said.

"I don't mind the classical music but I'm not into singing to vegetables or anything like that."

Mr Bull said despite the size of the sweet potatoes he at first had trouble finding them underground.

"I was digging around and at first I thought they were lumps of wood under the ground," he said.

"I just couldn't believe by the size that it could be them."

Mr Bull said the vegies tasted great and would be put to good use on the family's dinner plate.
