A VISIONARY $2 million-plus plan to transform the Port’s second surf life saving club has been lodged with Port Stephens Council.
It comes in the form of a development application which paves the way for a major upgrade of the Birubi Point club on its spectacular site above Stockton Beach at Anna Bay.
‘‘We’ve been trying for seven years to get this project up and going,’’ club president Rob Duff said this week.
‘‘Essentially we’re transforming what is the existing bunker-style storage complex into a modern clubhouse which will also provide a function centre for use by community groups and a magnificent venue for the general public to hire.
‘‘There is nothing like it in the Anna Bay area.’’
Proposed in the project is an auditorium, restaurant, training rooms and caretakers residence which will be created above the existing single level building.
There will also be an observation tower with the ability to check on nearby Little Beach.
Mr Duff said an application for $2.1 million in funding had been lodged with the Federal Government which if successful would be granted under its stimulus package. He said an answer on the application was expected soon and work could begin after July.
Mr Duff said a modern functioning clubhouse was essential to the growth of the club.
‘‘Our main source of income has been seafood raffles at the local caravan park,’’ he said.
‘‘The new building will provide an income stream by hire of the function area and enable us to upgrade our rescue equipment and be self-sufficient.’’
The club had its beginnings in 1993 operating out of the back of a truck on the beach. It was officially recognised as a surf life saving club 11 years ago.
