 Call to save the pipis

Call to save the pipis

22 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
PORT Stephens fishing identity John 'Stinker' Clarke has called on Port councillors to help his on-going campaign to save the pipis on the beaches around Port Stephens.

Previously the Examiner reported that pipi catches off Stockton Beach had dropped seven fold in the last decade.

As a result, a commercial pipi harvesting ban was put in place and harvesting is prohibited at all Port Stephens beaches until June 1.

But speaking to the council earlier this month Stinker said he wanted to see a further ban put in place until the resource had properly recovered.

He asked councillors to write to Port Stephens MP Craig Baumann and the minister for primary industries, Katrina Hodgkinson about the issue.

"We are the guardians of our natural resources" he said.

The majority of councillors who attended the meeting said they would support a motion to protect the shellfish.

A notice of motion is expected to be prepared by Cr John Nell .

Well good luck in getting a response from the fisheries minister, Katrina Hodgkinson.

She won’t even reply to her own staff about her decision to close the Cronulla Fisheries Research Centre. So if she doesn’t care about 150 people and their families, the pipis won’t get much of a look in.

And besides, the way she is treating fisheries research, who will be left to do the research to see when the pipis are recovered?

I hope John Clarke pointed out to the Minister that the natural water resources they are "guardians of" are nothing like agriculture - that they are actually public property and have to be managed for multiple uses including commercial and recreational fishing, and tourism such as diving. If so, I also hoped the Minister listened!!! Bit of a one way street that one.

....and if you do a get a response it will be an ill-advised one.....she dosen't ask the experts as she gets all her advice from her "stinking" senior beauractrats. I suggest you avoid writing to Ms Hodgkinson - she is only interesting in 'decentralisation' and dosen't give a damn about fisheries resources. Best of luck with this very important issue Stinker.

If you need something fixed in NSW Fisheries you'll have to do it yourself or rely on divine intervention. The government and bureaucrats have no idea what they're doing.

I have to agree, the Minister is busy cutting jobs in fisheries and ensuring her own department will not be able to function properly in the future. Though she could be more into pipi's than people, so give it a go.

So, over a week later, have the councilors received a reply from the minister for primary industries, Katrina Hodgkinson, to their letter yet?

Or even an acknowledgement that the letter was received?

Or is she treating you like she does any constituency who tries to correspond with her on an issue.

By totally ignoring both your correspondence and the issue.
