Community Garden for Raymond Terrace

08 Sep, 2010 09:51 AM
A RAYMOND Terrace community garden is getting under way with avid gardeners invited to come along and get their hands dirty.

On September 18 local gardener Craig Manhood will be running a Grow with Others workshop at the community garden behind the Youthie on Kings Street.

Mr Manhood said the workshop will offer practical tips on setting up, running or just participating in a community garden, knowledge sharing and a good chunk of practical hands-on participation.

‘‘The Terrace has a fantastic community garden that is currently underutilized,’’ he said.

‘‘It is fantastic because it is in beautiful King Street, by the river, with sculpted raised garden beds, fruit trees, water tanks, tools and heaps of potential.’’

Youthie social worker Emma Williams said she was hopeful the workshop would be the first of many.

‘‘In the garden we are making a space where people can come and enjoy the atmosphere, the networking and the community spirit,’’ she said.

Already tiles and bricks have been donated to construct a pizza oven and the Youthie is asking for more donations to complete the task.

‘‘Once we have all the pieces we want to get an expert in here to do a few workshops on the construction and build the oven as a group,’’ she said.

The Youthie will be using the garden and the oven to run classes on nutrition and cooking. To join the gardening workshop contact 4980 0251.
