DESPITE continued calls to slow down and drive responsibly on one of the Port's most dangerous stretches, about 85 per cent of drivers are still travelling at 15 km/h over Richardson Road's speed limit.
The information comes from data Port Stephens Council collected which led to a police crackdown along the stretch, which runs from Raymond Terrace to Salt Ash, in December where more than 50 motorists were nabbed.
"Council and police had also received a high number of complaints regarding speeding vehicles along that length of road," the council's road safety officer Lisa Lovegrove said.
"Further evidence of a problem was the high number of fatalities that have occurred on Richardson Road and the surrounding roads in recent years."
As a result of the crackdown, which took place from Thursday to Sunday on each weekend in December, 55 motorists were charged or issued with traffic infringements in just 16 days. Of those 17 related to speeding, 10 were issued to those driving unregistered vehicles and three were for drink driving. Northern Region Traffic Services police were responsible for the cross-border operation which included highway patrol officers from across the Hunter.
