Graffiti mural for Australia Day at Raymond Terrace

Graffiti mural for Australia Day at Raymond Terrace

19 Jan, 2011 12:00 AM
AUSTRALIA Day is all about celebrating the country's diversity, whether it be race, religion, background or beliefs.

With that in mind Port Stephens Council has moved to make celebrations on the river at Raymond Terrace a day for everyone - including youth.

Aerosol artists will provide demonstrations of their medium, creating a graffiti mural which will then be displayed in the council building.

Artist Callum Lourensz, 20, said he hoped the demonstration would help raise the profile of graffiti in the local community as a form of art.

"A lot of people seem to associate aerosol art or graffiti - whatever you want to call it - with vandalism," he said.

"It's more than that. For me it's something I can concentrate on."

A council spokeswoman said that the mural and graffiti display was a way to engage young people in Port Stephens. The council has also organised for youth ambassadors to help out on the day.
