TEN students in tertiary training are each $2500 better off thanks to the award of the first Port Stephens Mayoral scholarships.

The inaugural round of scholarships were handed out on Saturday.

"I'm particularly proud of this initiative with local businesses assisting local students to reach their full potential," Mayor Bruce MacKenzie said.

They were available across a range of disciplines including engineering, hospitality, tourism and local government and will be offered again next year. Recipients were Richard Bailey, Jake Harden, Hugh James, Anika Bailey, Phillip Marriot, Lorelle Shearer, Hannah Wilson, Esther Wilson, Lucy Everingham, Phillipa Affleck, and Belinda Every.
