'Me too' on RAAF policies

04 Aug, 2010 01:00 AM
EVEN thinking voters could be forgiven if they saw little difference in the mainstream Paterson candidates over aircraft noise.

Contenders, Liberal's Bob Baldwin and Labor's Jim Arneman, have announced almost "me-too" policies to tackle the noise challenges when Defence's Joint Strike Fighter comes into use.

Mr Arneman this week followed the lead of incumbent Paterson MP Bob Baldwin announcing a three-point plan to tackle the controversial JSF noise issue.

Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Mike Kelly joined Mr Arneman for the announcement.

Mr Baldwin has pledged a runway extension and a second instrument landing system if the Coalition wins government while Mr Arneman has backed a feasibility study into the idea.

Both support new committees to investigate ways to reduce aircraft noise, a recall of Defence's 2025 ANEF maps, and a moratorium on the proposed Kings Hill estate.

While the plan is almost identical to that recently released by Mr Baldwin, Mr Arneman said a December deadline separated the two.

"The back of an envelope announcement that Bob Baldwin made last week, with no time frame is unlike this which has a time frame for the end of the year," Mr Arneman said. Mr Baldwin said Mr Arneman had no understanding of the issue.

"Mr Arneman has no idea about the issues and has placed his faith in Mike Kelly who has already said he doesn't believe there is anything more that can be done to help residents," Mr Baldwin said.

Ha! Forget the major parties promises. If you want to make your objection to the unwanted/warranted RAAF noise vote for any other party than the two major parties. It will be the only way to make them wake up take notice. Have a nice day.

What consideration are either of the two major parties giving to the already present noise affects in our region? Are the people of Swan Bay, East Medowie to the Tilligerry the forgotten people? Extending the runway will not alleviate their suffering.

El Zorro, green pref's go to labor. Personally this is not our regions most important issue. our Roads are garbage and will result in further deaths if not overhauled. Surely any death is of higher priority than an inconvienance and yes i live in the region.

I would like to make a comment, if the runway is extended, the airport will most likely increase with flights and maybe go international? I would prefer the aircraft routes be looked again, and redirect maybe Kings Hill way. There is no houses there and is not yet sub divided. Rezoning that lane is easy as no one lives on it at the moment. Ones own land is in question - valuation of land is in question. SAFE EARS have got the ball rolling with LE MONTEE running the ship. Please remember Medowie residents, Swan Bay, Oyster Cove will for sure notice more plane action etcc if the run way is extended.

Steve, I wish this was just a inconvience, but unfortunately I must agree with bobbie that extending the runway plus the recent study being funded for a High speed train between Newcastle and Sydney = International Airport. It has been some slick work by local developers to hoodwink people into believing that extending the runway is in their best interest.

The closure of the Weapons Range at Salt Ash to the JSF is a critical component to this whole debate. No use of the range means less overall use of the JSF over Port Stephens. The proposed Medowie High School will NOT be built if the JSF is used at the range. NSW Planning have their own set of rules for schools. They are considered 'sensitive receivers' and can only be built where there is little to no noise impacts from industry or loud noise sources.

I think each and every Port Stephens resident should take a step back and have a look at how much money the air port and the RAAF inject into the local ecconomy. I grew up, and still live with in 20 klm of the base. The RAAF and their Jets were there before me and dare i say before alot of the whinging groups. Get off the RAAFs back and let them do there job, i for one am proud of the base and all those who serve in uniform, if you dont like air craft noise then i suggest you MOVE. ADF Member
