Mother sent away has baby at home

04 Mar, 2010 01:00 AM
IN THE throws of labour Georgia Maloney of Raymond Terrace says she was given two pain relievers and sent home from John Hunter Hospital.

Within half an hour she was giving birth in the dark with only her partner and parents to help her.

Daughter Violet May Bell was born at about 8.20pm on Monday night.

"It was scary, I have never experienced anything like it in my life," partner Dane Bell said.

According to Ms Maloney's mother Karen Maloney no one at the hospital would listen to her daughter when she said she was in labour.

"We explained we were from Raymond Terrace and the woman said once we get home we can always turn around and come back again," Karen said.

She returned to her parent's home to take a bath and the baby's head started to breach.

"We moved her onto her brother's bed, we had to put the television on for light because the light in that room had blown that day," Karen said.

When the family called the hospital for help they said they had been put on hold for more than 10 minutes.

"The birth started and I couldn't disconnect to call the ambulance because I was still on hold," she said.

Georgia said both the ambulance crew and the midwife who helped her through her pregnancy were excellent. A hospital spkeswoman told the Examiner the medical care provided to the women was appropriate but that communication was not as good as it could have been.

It had offered its apologies.
