Pink effort paying off for Campvale farmer

20 Oct, 2010 01:00 AM
A POSSIBLE link between mushrooms and breast cancer prevention has a Campvale farmer turning pink for a good cause.

Hunter Valley Mushrooms owner Regina Mullan said a university study which revealed women who eat as little as one button mushroom per day could be protecting themselves against breast cancer, inspired her to want to help.

The study found women who consumed fresh mushrooms were about two-thirds less likely to develop breast cancer.

"This is the first time we've been involved in the October breast cancer awareness campaign and I think we can do it even better next year," she said.

Ms Mullan and her daughters this month aim to ship more than 20,000 kilograms of mushrooms packaged in special pink crates.

A portion of the sales are pledged to breast cancer Pink Ribbon day appeal resulting in an $800 donation.
