PORT residents are being urged to donate tinned food and other non-perishable items to assist an increasing number of people falling below the poverty line.
Local charity organisations including the Salvation Army, Samaritans and Wesley Mission Newcastle, have all reported an increase in the number of people across Newcastle and Port Stephens who are finding themselves in crisis.
Speaking on behalf of the combined groups Samaritans CEO Cec Shevels said the organisations were struggling to meet demand.
"Those on low income are pushed to the limit and rises in bills such as electricity and water along with skyrocketing rental payments build up over a period of time to a point where something has to give," he said.
Mr Shevels said the increased demand had seen food supplies become dangerously low and more was needed.
Non-perishable items such as long-life milk, cereal, spread, rice, pasta, soup, tins of fruit and vegetables have been included on the list. Food donations can be made at Examiner offices throughout the month of April.
