Port help in plucky title win

27 Apr, 2011 12:00 AM
THESE Port musicians have embedded themselves in a global ukulele revolution.

An orchestra, or Ukestra, of Hunter players attended the Melbourne Ukulele Festival recently, walking away with the coveted Golden Ukulele title.

Among them were the Port players Rosina Smith and Wendy Townsend, led by community musician Mark Jackson who runs the Fingal Bay-based Ukestra.

While the award hardly carries the prestige of its Tamworth Country Music Festival namesake, the Golden Ukulele, a plastic ukulele with texta inscriptions, represents a significant accolade.

"The judges have basically said we are the best community ukulele orchestra in Australia," Mr Jackson said.

The Tomaree Ukestra, which Mr Jackson launched, plays every Tuesday morning at Fingal Bay Sport and Recreation Club.

Those interested in joining the group can contact Mr Jackson on 0430 434 291 or go to www.ukestra.com.
