Port pick- up record

10 Mar, 2010 10:36 AM
DIVE volunteers and marine park staff on Sunday collected more than 80 kilograms of rubbish from the Port Stephens waterway.

The pick-up was just one of a number of Clean-up Australia Day initiatives held around the Port.

Marine park spokeswoman Britt Anderson said the effort focused on removing rubbish from the Boat Harbour breakwall at Nelson Bay. Ms Anderson said glass bottles, aluminium cans and discarded fishing gear were the most common items collected. A group of 27 volunteers also cleaned up areas around Bagnalls Beach where they collected 45 bags of rubbish. In total clean up crews gathered 11 tonnes of rubbish from around the Port.
