Port Stephens Council divide growing

26 May, 2010 10:13 AM
THE divisons among Port Stephens councillors are growing wider with central ward representative Steve Tucker attacking five of his peers.

Cr Tucker said this week claims (Examiner May 20) by Cr Dingle that he had four other councillors - John Nell, Frank Ward, Glenys Francis and Peter Kafer - would do what it took to disrupt council meetings was sour grapes and whinging.

"What's new?" he told the Examiner this week.

"They have always been negative and disruptive.

"Their contribution to the council has been one of constant whinging and a stream of deferrals, reports and rescission motions."

He said the five were Labor party members or supporters and upset they were a minority at the council.

"For the first time in many years, Port Stephens has a truly independent mayor and deputy, and the ALP can't stand it," Cr Tucker who is a member of the Liberal party said.

"Crs Bruce MacKenzie and Bob Westbury have both run successful businesses in the past and they are doing an excellent job.

"The real problem is that the Labor block on council has lost its power and influence and they are desperate to get it back - whatever the cost."

Cr Tucker said the council had embarked on major roads and drainage works.

He said Crs MacKenzie and Westbury would continue to have his support and that of his two fellow Liberal councillors, Sally Dover and Ken Jordan,"

Hmm Cr Tucker would be surprised how much support Geoff Dingle has in Port Stephens.

CrTucker's poor support for the people was shown in the "Save Oyster Cove" debacle and his comments during the PSC meeting on Tuesday night.

Please don't insult the councillors whether Labor or Liberal that are genuinely helping the residents of Port Stephens.

Don't be a lap dog Cr Tucker - stop panting to the Mayor and general manager and stand up for the residents in Port Stephens.

I am most disappointed, perhaps even disquieted, to see current debate both in and around council being reduced by any elected representative on Council to some kind of simplistic party political divide. Surely what matters in local government, is not who we might vote for at State or Federal levels, but rather the nature of the matter itself. That is, ISSUE based decision making. If we start thinking Council is a party political environment, we might as well do away with this very important Third tier of government and just rely on beauracrats. Ideally local government should be one of the the last lines of defence for "Keeping The B*****ds Honest", dont you think ? Block voting along some strange invisible concotion of party line religious observances is a pretty sad state of affairs if thats what some Cr's think. It should not be the province of intelligent, independent minded, thinking people in local government. Of course, perhaps, sadly this might not be the case, in some cases. I say "Vote 1" for thinking, independent minded locals, governing for locals. Bruce Lyon Candidate for West Ward on June 19.
