PORT Stephens residents are being encouraged to ask themselves - is your life too plastic? - and come along to a free information evening on what they can do to reduce plastic pollution in the area.
The free session, to be held at the Tomaree Library and Community Centre on February 29 from 6.30pm, is the next instalment of Port Stephens Council's marine discovery series which aims to increase community awareness of issues affecting our coast and marine environment.
Guest speaker at the event will be Central Coast environmentalist Tim Silverwood who will discuss his adventure sailing 5000km from Hawaii to Vancouver to the 'great pacific garbage patch' to see the global situation of plastic pollution.
The documentary 'Bag It' will also be shown and Mr Silverwood will build awareness of his 'Take 3' beach initiative which asks that everyone take three pieces of rubbish away with them when they leave the beach or any other waterway.
The council's environmental education officer Melinda Anderson encouraged all to attend.
"It will raise their (the communities) awareness about the consequences of plastic pollution in our oceans and they will learn some simple things we can do to make our lives less plastic dependent," she said.
"I would encourage people to come along so they can hear and see first hand the devastating impact that plastic pollutants are having on our marine environment and our precious wildlife."
Attendance is free and bookings are not needed. For more information contact Melinda Anderson on 4980 0251 or Brian Hughes on 0428 29 3021.
