Replica bi-plane on show at Fighter World

28 Jul, 2010 12:00 AM
DINGO Airlines has arrived in Port Stephens.

A replica 1930s Stearman bi-plane used in the 2003 comedy film Kangaroo Jack is the latest addition to Fighter World's collection at its Williamtown museum.

In the film, the plane was part of the fictional Dingo Airways fleet.

Manager David Smith said Fighter World volunteers had spent the past four months revamping the bright yellow plane.

"It was given to us by the film's producers and the volunteers stripped and cleaned it, re-painted the engine, added the propeller and manufactured stringers on the wings," he said.

Mr Smith said the real Stearmans were used during World War II by Australian Defence Force personnel training in Canada in the late 1930s.

While the model at Fighter Force is only about a third of the plane's true size, Mr Smith said Stearman planes were still being manufactured today.

"These days they are used for aerobatics," Mr Smith said.
