ROAD rage, texting, talking on the phone while driving and failing to check blind spots are some of the behaviours which have motorcyclists fearing for their safety on Port roads.
John Evans has been riding bikes for close to 30 years and is lucky to be alive after being hit by a car at Nelson Bay eight years ago.
"He (the driver) pulled out of Taree Street and ran straight into me," Mr Evans said. "People just don't see you."
While he escaped serious injury, Mr Evans has since had 'lots of close calls' and has lost two friends as a result of motorcycle accidents. He is joining thousands of riders in urging road users to be vigilant when driving as part of the Motorcycle Council's awareness week.
"You see people on the phone, texting and talking and they have no idea that you are there," he said.
"The other concern is the condition of the roads, we have to swerve for a lot of potholes."
The motorcycle council is aiming to improve overall awareness and safety of bike riders across the state via the week which ends on Sunday.
As well, it aims to promote the benefits of two-wheels as a fuel-efficient and convenient way to travel.
