Speeding tops Port police's Easter blitz list

15 Apr, 2009 10:24 AM
MORE than 4280 random breath tests were conducted and 16 drivers charged with drink driving across Port Stephens as part of a state-wide operation conducted during the Easter long weekend.

Operation Tortoise saw 63 people fined for speeding and 12 people fined for seatbelt infringements a result that was labelled disappointing by Port police.

"To get 16 drink driving offences out of 4284 breath tests is probably below the state average but it is still too many," Inspector David Matthews said.

"And 63 speeding infringements along with 12 restraint infringement notices is quite disappointing.

"We want to get the message out there that if you're out there doing the wrong thing you will be caught."

He said officers were instructed to have zero tolerance for all traffic infringements.

The 'police know the back roads too' message hit home for one motorist charged with mid-range drink driving on Friday night. The man, 62, had turned into a number of side streets in Raymond Terrace in what police allege was an attempt to evade a patrol car, but in doing so he wound up at the site of a roadside RBT station.

The driver allegedly avoided stopping when flagged down by officers and was later stopped by the same patrol car on Seaham Road just after 7.30pm.

The man, from New Lambton Heights, allegedly returned a reading of .138 blood alcohol content and will appear in Raymond Terrace Local Court on April 27. Port police also arrested a Silverdale man, 40, for high-range drink driving at Myall Street, Tea Gardens on Friday night while a provisional driver was charged with novice-range drink driving on Saturday night, allegedly returning a reading of .015. Police say they will be out in force again for the Anzac weekend.
