AN ALL inclusive support network aimed at female cancer patients, but which could also include men, may be up and running on the Tomaree Peninsula by May.
With the backing of Hunter Region Cancer Council, which would provide vital start-up revenue, including advertising and insurance for the group, two women are looking to make support for cancer patients their number one agenda in the region. Headed by cancer survivors Sarah Litten and Tammi Ison, it would meet once a month and include patients undergoing rare or common cancer treatment. It would initially be slanted at women, but could also include men, given the flexibility and scope of the group's resources. Costs for home care, living expenses, and possibly transport would be subsidised.
"To start off with, we would make it a ladies group," Mrs Litten said.
"We would want to include a naturopath and to just help people relax."
"Transport would also be an option."
Hunter Region Cancer Council spokesperson Dana Buzinec said it would be a great boost for the area given Port Stephens Cancer Support group folded two years ago. According to Mrs Litten, more needs to be done for cancer patients living long distances from treatment services.
"I don't see why we can't have chemo here."
