SOME Tanilba Bay residents are refusing to maintain their street fronts in protest at Port Stephens Council's decision to continue charging property owners half the cost of laying new footpaths past their homes.
All seven residents said they were angry over the decision and felt it was unfair.
‘‘We didn’t ask for a footpath, we don’t want a footpath, and now we have to pay for it,’’ Clemenceau Crescent resident Brian Stones said.
Councillors are to soon debate a rescission motion seeking to get rid of the charges.
Mr Stones said he also believed the council was overcharging for the construction of footpaths.
‘‘For the area outside my house, according to the council my half of the bill is $1671, but the concreters I rang all quoted a total of around $1400 for the whole thing,’’ Mr Stones said.
‘‘In October the Mayor said in the paper the council would look into outsourcing the work, to me that’s admitting the cost is too high.
‘‘Have a look down the street right now, there are nine or 10 council workers standing around doing nothing and that’s what’s costing so much, the labour.’’
Neighbour Michael Mullin said he was also upset with the proximity of a new footpath to his fence.
Mr Mullin said the council had constructed the footpath less than metre from his fence causing a blindspot whenever he drove out of his driveway.
‘‘My wife had to sell her car after she nearly ran over a lady walking by, just from the stress of it,’’ he said.
‘‘If this decision isn’t reversed come election time we will find somebody that will listen to us and back them to the hilt.’’
