A MEDOWIE family has called on Port Stephens Council to install a wheelchair accessible toilet at the town's Yulong Oval.
Susan and Ian Fielding took their wheelchair-bound son Andrew, 30, to a recent soccer presentation ceremony at the oval.
However, Mrs Fielding said the event was ruined for the family when Andrew had to be lifted onto the locker room toilet by two men from the soccer club because his wheelchair could not access the men's or women's toilets.
The council's recreational services manager Jason Linnane said the council and Medowie Sports Council were already planning to upgrade the toilet facilities at Yulong Oval, and other sportsfields across the area.
"It is on our agenda and we regard it as being a high priority," he said. Mr Linnane said he expected the Yulong Oval disabled toilets to be completed within two years.
Andrew, who suffered a major brain injury, is blind and has limited movement on his left side as a result of a motorcycle crash in 2001, was upset and embarrassed by the situation, his mother said. "It was just awful and I got so upset I had to leave without seeing the kids get their trophies," Mrs Fielding said.
"But it was not only the toilets, there was also no disabled parking and it was raining that day, so trying to get the wheelchair around all the puddles was difficult."
