Tomaree college's quest for green thumb retirees

10 Mar, 2010 10:22 AM
RETIREES in units or houses with no or limited gardens are the prime candidates for a new Tomaree Community College program.

The college is launching a community garden on its Government Road site at Nelson Bay.

College chief executive officer Ella Clarke said it was the ideal opportunity for those who did not have space for their own garden to get their hands dirty and make some friends along the way.

"We think it will be largely retirees who don't have room for their own gardens who will want to get involved and that would be great," she said.

Other interested residents are also welcome to lend a hand.

Nelson Bay resident Vanda Rowlinds said she looked forward to the social aspect of the new program.

There will be an official sod-turning ceremony for the garden on March 26, which will coincide with Seniors Week. To register an interest contact the college.
