PORT Stephens diabetes educator and practitioner Annabel Thurlow has ventured to the UK this week to attend one of the world's biggest conferences on the disease.
Ms Thurlow is one of 5000 health care professionals to attend the week-long conference.
"Diabetes is a huge problem in Port Stephens," she said.
"The average Australian rate for people diagnosed with it is 3.3 per cent but here in Port Stephens it is 5.9 per cent.
"This conference will give me the chance to attend seminars," Ms Thurlow said.
"To find out what other professionals are doing, what developments are being made in the treatment and management of diabetes and to also share with others what is working here."
Ms Thurlow has developed a large poster which will aid her in educating others attending the conference. As the only health care professional from Port Stephens to attend, Ms Thurlow said she hopes to share knowledge gained from the experience with patients and other practitioners when she returns.
