A NEW era in Port Stephens health care is set to go next week with the opening of the Nelson Plaza Superclinic.
The privately-operated clinic, with a start-up grant from the federal government, is to open on Monday in the plaza building off Stockton Street.
It aims to provide patients with access to general practitioners, pathology services, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and podiatry.
According to Dr Warwick Yonge, who is one of two doctors setting up the clinic, the development has already garnered the interest of a large number of residents seeking medical treatment.
"We did a small letter drop of houses just in the immediate area where people could register for an appointment," Dr Yonge said.
"I think by the following day we had 12 faxes come through. Now we're already up to about 100 people and I think by the time we open the number could be north of 1000."
The clinic will begin operating with four doctors, three nurses and six administration staff.
Dr Yonge said patients would not only benefit by having a range of allied health services under one roof but also by bulk billing services for concession card holders and children under 16 years, as well as the introduction of a local only one problem appointments.
Dr Yonge said the super clinic would have a number of long-term benefits including shorter waiting times to see a doctor, better preventative care and chronic disease management.
It would also ease pressures on Tomaree Hospital.
"I think that a lot of people have turned to the hospital for ongoing treatment of chronic disease and general consults and hospitals, anywhere, are just not designed to cope with that," he said.
"Hopefully we can fill that gap."
