NORTHERN NSW Football (NNSWF) will downsize its first division competition to a 10-team format in 2011 and Nelson Bay United will lobby for a promotion as part of that restructure.
United are currently third on the Interdistrict first grade ladder, despite a 3-2 loss to the lowly-placed Plattsburg FC on the weekend, and are well positioned for a title push in September.
But their on-field performance will have no bearing on an attempt to climb one rung up the Hunter's footballing hierarchy and break into first division next year.
Facilities, finances, administration and geography are some of the NNSWF's selection criteria for the 15 clubs that have nominated for a spot in next year's competition.
"Performance will not be that relevant to be honest with you," NNSWF operations manager Alan Nisbet said.
Club president Zoran Rankovic believes the club has covered the relevant bases and Nisbet welcomed the idea of a team based in Port Stephens.
"Geography is very important, it's only because of history that we have had teams like Broadmeadow and Hamilton, who are right next to each other, playing," he said.
"We would certainly look at some more regional teams.
"I would not be adverse to having a team from Nelson Bay or Raymond Terrace if that was possible."
Mr Nisbet said no announcement would be made on who the successful 10 clubs were until after the September grand final.
If their bid was successful Nelson Bay would then be one level from the NNSWF's premier competition, state league.
United will attempt to redeem a disappointing result against Plattsburg FC as they go on the road against Kotara South Senior on Sunday.
