AN $18 million state-of-the-art bus manufacturing plant has week launched its official opening in Tomago.
The Volgren plant is expected to deliver 150 articulated (bendy) buses to service State Transit Sydney services.
NSW Transport Minister David Campbell joined Minster for the Hunter Jodi McKay on site for the opening.
"The new plant will support around 250 jobs in the region and will provide a boost to local business and the economy," Mr Campbell said. "Establishing the Volgren plant in Tomago is great news for the Hunter and means the delivery of all buses across the state can be brought forward by a year to 2011."
The first bus manufactured at the plant was sent to Sydney last week.
Mr Campbell said the plant was also in a good position to win further contracts to manufacture 1000 buses identified in the Government's 10-year transport blueprint.
