Wealth of talent at Medowie Christian School

19 May, 2010 10:42 AM
A BELIEF in the relationship between school sport participation and academic excellence is behind a rich vein of sporting talent flowing through Medowie Christian School.

In the school's secondary Years, 7 to 10, eight students have reached regional, state or national competitions.

And with disciplines spanning the track, field and pool, the talent appears as diverse as it is deep.

Fifteen-year-old triathlete Hayley Follett last term represented the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) at the Australian School Triathlon Championships in Adelaide in the individual and team event.

She left the Australian School Cycling Cup in Shepparton, Victoria, with a second place in the senior women's time trial and third in the road race.

She has also been selected to compete in the upcoming CIS Swimming Championships at Homebush.

Year 10 classmate Ebony Holly will also join Follett at the CIS Cross Country carnival after finishing ninth at the Christian School Sports Association (CSSA) titles recently.

Jamie Mayan, in Year 9, will also attend the CIS Cross Country championships after he finished sixth at the CSSA state event.

Year 9 CSSA open girls football representative Jahna Smyth played at the CIS State gala day on May 12 and is preparing to strap on the boots for the National Christian Schools Football Invitational Championships in August.

After competing in seven events at the recent CIS Swimming Championships at Homebush, Year 9 student Ebony Oakley will attend the National Christian Schools Swimming Championships in Brisbane this week. Trio Ben Rochester, Steven Allen and Blake Smylie also represented the school at the CIS swimming event at Homebush as part of the 12-14 years boys four by 50m medley relay team.
