THE Port Stephens Sharks are still swimming in the Newcastle rugby league.
The club has confirmed it is chasing the assistance of a last-minute financial backer, who could help steer them onto the paddock ahead of a vital one-off fixture against a Newcastle under 20s team on February 3.
Club president Wayne Humphrey said he hoped to broker a deal by week's end.
"An opportunity has come to light," he told the Examiner.
"We are exploring that opportunity and hope to have an answer [this week]."
A Sharks squad has resumed training under new coach James McCabe, with the services of its coaching co-ordinators, including last year's Northern Blues coach Charlie Haggett.
Two matches will be played at Tomaree Sportsground on the night of February 3, with the Sharks to play a Newcastle under 20s side in a curtain raiser to a combined NSW cup/Knights fixture against a Newcastle rep team.
"We are excited about the opportunity to showcase the new club," Humphrey said.
The games will be played at 5.30pm and 7.30pm.
New Knights NRL coach Wayne Bennett is right behind the scheduled event.
"I understand this game has been on the calendar for some time and we are happy we can support the Port Stephens Sharks in this way," Bennett said.
Mr Humphrey has praised the Newcastle Rugby League for its continued support in driving the Sharks forward.
The Newcastle competition proper gets underway in April.
