Tomaree High School students star in touch football

28 Dec, 2011 12:00 AM
THE touch football paddock is proving to be a place Tomaree High School students are getting to know well.

A host of skilled athletes from the high school are making inroads into the sport, which is being pushed by touch footballing mentor and new Hunter schools touch convenor Jodie Laloata.

Students from years 7 through 11 are making the sport their own.

Both Sam Burns and Mitchell Wilton, 15, are playing beyond their years, where they represent the Nelson Bay Touch Association's under 20 team.

The pair were part of the Hunter squad, along with classmates Todd Edmond and Jack Shein, who won the under 15 state championships held in Newcastle earlier this year.

Mitch's good form in the Hunter squad warranted his selection into the under 16 Combined High School team.

Selection into the elite squad of school-aged students saw him compete against some of the states best.

Not only are the school's students doing well, but Ms Laloata, who is a casual teacher at the school, has also been named the Hunter schools touch convenor, overseeing around 40 schools in the region.
