PLAGUED by an ongoing knee injury, Brandon Donkin pulled out of the long jump at the State Little Athletics Championships in an effort to conserve himself for his favoured triple jump.
It was a strategic move that paid the ultimate dividend, as the 17-year-old defied a determined Sydney competitor to win the event and set a new State record of 14.06 metres.
The Irrawang High School student has been battling a condition known as jumpers knee, caused by wear and tear from a decade of athletics training.
"It held up pretty well through the whole event," he said. "But it was really sore afterwards."
After having traded the lead with Sydney's Ben Cox a number of times, Brandon was set a 13.87 metre target before his final jump.
He replied once more with the best competition jump of his career.
"I guess it was just the fight inside of me," Brandon said.
Brandon ignited onlookers with the winning jump only six weeks after coming under the tutelage of nationally-renowned jumps trainer Max Debnam.
It will be under his guidance that Brandon goes in search of his next goal, the 2014 World Youth Championships.
Donkin received the Northern Country Regional Athlete of the Year award and a $500 scholarship from McDonalds after setting the State record.
Fellow Raymond Terrace Athletics Club member Breanna Franks won silver in the 100m and bronze in the 60 metre hurdles.
Brandon said he is currently balancing a hefty Year 12 work load with his athletics commitments.
