YOUNG Clarence Town motorsport enthusiast, Keith Hammond, tackles his first state hillclimb event at the weekend.
Fifteen-year-old Keith has already been competing in Motokhana events since he earnt his first CAMS licence at 12.
While Keith has already had three years experience in motorsport the specially built car he will drive in the seventh round of the NSW State Hillclimb Championship at Ringwood Track has clocked up 42 years.
The car is a Reno Sierra which the was built in 1968 and purchased by Keith's father Ron 12years ago.
Keith has progressed though the Newcastle MG Car Club's junior program.
The club has a young driver education program which leads to a CAMS licence for Motokhana events at 12, for speed events like the hillclimb at 14 and a circuit licence at 16.
Some of Australia's top drivers will line up for the hillclimb at the weekend.
The track, 10 kilometres north of Raymond Terrace off Italia Road, is tight twisty track with a fast loop and will challenge the competitors.
Multiple Australian Hillclimb champion Peter Gumley will be driving a faster, refurbished car coming back after a year's layoff from the sport.
Practice is on Saturday afternoon and the championship proper gets underway at 8.30am on Sunday.
