Corry siblings Athens bound

21 Jul, 2010 01:00 AM
NEWS that they would travel to Athens as part of the Australian Special Olympics team took a while to "sink in" for Anna Bay siblings Kieran and Taylor Corry.

Special Olympics Australia is yet to release a competition program detailing which events the pair will swim in but Kieran and Taylor got the nod from selectors following the nationals in Adelaide in April.

Eighteen-year-old Kieran has been given an assurance however that he will swim the 400m at the Games to be held from June 25 to July 4 next year.

"To be honest it was a huge surprise and it has taken a while to sink in," the St Phillips Christian College student said.

With 7,500 special olympics athletes from 185 nations expected to compete in 22 Olympic-type sports, the Special Olympics World Summer Games is touted as the biggest sporting event worldwide for the year 2011.

Fifteen-year-old Taylor made her claim for a 50m butterfly position at the Games after swimming a personal best time and taking bronze at the Australian Short Course Championships in Brisbane on Sunday.
