JACK Maddocks could hardly bend over to tie his shoelace a week before winning dual State titles at the NSW Combined High School (CHS) tennis championships in Penrith last month.
A back injury cast a shadow over the young star's State CHS plans, but emergency physiotherapy and determination saw that those plans would still go ahead.
Maddocks won his first five games in the opening two days of the boys competition in the Blue Mountains.
This set up the decider against Nathan Doney from Gorokan High School on the final day of the titles in Sydney.
The Raymond Terrace junior was in no mood to delay his title success, rolling Doney 6-1, 6-1.
The Year 9 Hunter River High School student also teamed up with good mate and training partner Brandon Parrey of Ashtonfield to take out the boys doubles crown.
