RAMPAGING front rower Angus Fraser can still remember how it felt to become a NSW Country Champion, but there wasn’t a fellow Groper in sight to enjoy it with.
This time, the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union (NHRU) Colts forward pack could include three of his Nelson Bay team mates, with a fourth in the outside backs.
Loose forwards Sam Leitch, Jed Alexander and Hugh James will join Fraser in the final NHRU Colts selection trial against the Gropers at Bill Strong Oval from 2pm on Saturday.
Although absent overseas, fullback-wing Dillon Rowney is also expected to lineup for the representative side this year.
The Gropers association with this year’s Colts representative team does not end at the sideline, in fact it gets bigger.
Coach Matt Thomas, his assistant Darren Hancock, team manager Scott McManus, assistant manager Wayne Langford and three other members of the support team are all past or present Gropers.
It will be only Fraser’s second year in NHRU colours after the Tamworth junior enjoyed a long tenure in the Central North representative ranks.
He has so far enjoyed jumping regional boundaries.
‘‘I’ve been in two finals with the Central North rep team but never won and played about six years with them before last season...then in my first year with Newcastle we won the Country Championships,’’ he said.
The Gropers will field previous and current first graders with a smattering of Colts players to take on the Hunter’s best under 20s talent at the weekend.
NHRU are the reigning Country Champions and will look to continue that success when their campaign gets underway at Tomaree Sporting Complex on March 20 against the Far North Coast.
Semi finals and finals for the event will be held at Belmont on March 27 and 28.
This Saturday’s game will start at 2pm and consist of four 30 minute quarters.
