Maya aims for a state spot

07 Jul, 2010 01:00 AM
NUDGING her way through the ranks of the state's Catholic primary school sports system is no mean feat for Maya Stewart given she is three years younger than some opponents.

The Nelson Bay 10 year old is one of 14 players selected to represent the NSW Catholic Primary Schools Polding touch football team.

Chosen from the best Catholic school touch talent in northern NSW, the Polding Year 5 and 6 team will contest the NSW Primary School Sports Association championships in Coffs Harbour in August.

Selectors eyed Maya at the Polding championships in Port Macquarie last month where the St Michael's, Nelson Bay, student twice crossed the stripe for her Diocesan side.

Maya says scoring tries and running fast are the facets drawing her to the game and selectors to her.

While she has risen with ease through the regional, Diocesan and Polding stages, Maya will have to produce something special in Coffs Harbour to score a spot in the NSW PSSA side.

That team will attend the national championships in Queensland later in the year.
