PRESEASON training for the Nelson Bay Gropers was kicked up a notch this week, when the club hosted former Wallabies hooker Lance 'Butch' Walker for a one off scrum clinic.
Held at Bill Strong Oval last Thursday night, the clinic aimed at providing a strong technical grounding for the Groper's forward pack, with Walker instructing on scrum tactics, as well as going over rules and looking at safety aspects of the scrum.
"I just think it's about sharing knowledge of the scrum so that everyone knows their job," Walker said.
"It's about teamwork, everyone thinks it's just about the front-row but it's actually about the whole pack working together."
Walker said he rated a strong scrum as an important part of the game.
"I've seen Australian teams demolished without a strong scrum so it can be important," he said.
"If you don't have it and the opposition finds that out they'll definitely exploit it."
Walker, who until recently was the director of rugby at Warringah Rugby Club, played two tests for the Wallabies in the the nineteen eighties.
