THE primary schools national football championships is being held at Tomaree Sports Complex for the first time and is set to generate $50,000 for the Port economy.
The competition kicked-off on Monday and will wrap up tomorrow with 120 primary-aged soccer players converging on the Port to compete.
According to coordinator Jody O'Brien the surge of people spending money on accommodation, food and sight-seeing is a boost during a traditionally slow tourism period.
Nelson Bay Football club is providing catering throughout the week and council sports facilities coordinator Clayton Barr is hoping the event is the start of a trend.
"The Primary Schools Sports Association chose to hold its national championships at Tomaree due to its first class facilities and strong relationship with the Hunter Primary Schools Sports Association (HPSSA)," he said.
"Hopefully, after the success of this event, Tomaree will become the premier destination for national sporting championships to be held."
