Special Olympics on water

10 Mar, 2010 10:39 AM
OLYMPIC fever is set to hit Port Stephens.

The Port's Sailability branch will hold the Special Olympics NSW Regional Invitational State Games regatta this Saturday and Sunday at its Medowie club.

Around 20 one and two-person crews and their Access dinghies from across NSW, ACT and Victoria will converge on Grahamstown Dam for the event.

Competitors will be out to seize more than an enjoyable day on the water and their share of podium spots in five categories.

The club received a huge boost in the lead up to the event with Port Stephens Council donating a $20,000 safety craft to the club.

"The one we had was 20 years old and we have borrowed one for the meantime, so we're very grateful," the club's Frank Bardsley said.

Competing this weekend will be the Port's two representatives in this year's NSW team, Melissa Nelson and Brad Alderton.

The pair qualified at last year's State regatta and will attend the Special Olympics Australia National Games in Adelaide in April.
