IT BEGAN with a double-handed break, followed quickly by a back kick, jumping flying side kick and the finale - a jumping smash kick.
That was the order in which Sam Davis claimed his first State title.
Davis wowed judges at the NSW State Taekwondo Championships at Homebush last month, taking gold in the under 14 speed board break.
The Corlette 14-year-old had 30 seconds to set up the five wooden boards with the help of as many willing participants to hold them, and was allowed about the same time to perform his routine.
It took just a few seconds to successfully break all five boards in a seamless execution of the four moves he had practiced with Port-based master Ronald Bergan.
"He performed so well, even the way he set it up was really good. He was very confident and that does count towards getting the medals," Bergan said.
Davis adds State champion to the student-of-the-year award he gained in his first year at Bergan's school.
The Tomaree High School student took more than the number one title away from the Sydney event that lured almost 900 junior and senior competitors.
"It was great to see how the other people and the other masters were teaching things," he said.
After having tried the gamut of mainstream junior sports Taekwondo remains Davis's past time of choice.
"I've tried a lot of other things but I just seem to have stuck with this."
Bergan had some success of his own at the State championships, being named the best and fairest of the 35 referees at the one-day event.
