QUIET conditions on the water have resulted in little action in the fishing world. There are still whiting, bream, flathead and jewfish inside the port with nothing spectacular to report.
The strangest catch for the week was “Schoie’s” luderick, caught off Stockton Beach on a worm. There are a few early morning tailor off the rocks at Fingal and Boat Harbour, not monsters but they do perform well in the pan. Duffy’s “Crabometer” has seized on 1 however his new “Squidometer” has shot up to an impressive 5 with son Will, landing a bucket full of thumpers just north of Fingal. I’m told that the green eyed squid had “Heads like tennis balls”.
NSW Fisheries is calling for funding applications for projects that benefit recreational fishing in NSW. Matching funding is encouraged and can be provided as in-kind support, such as voluntary labour. Examples of previously funded projects can be found at www.industry.nsw.gov.au. I’m sure that there are heaps of improvements that could be made to improve recreational fishing in Port Stephens. It’s up to you, remember it’s your money that funds these projects.
Unfortunately improvements to boat ramps are not considered. By the way, now that the holiday rush is over, what are your opinions of the temporary alterations to Little Beach boat ramp. Have things improved? Email me stinkerfishing@yahoo.com
I spent a morning, through the week, fishing on the CooP wharf, with the staff and kids from Bobs Farm Primary School. I had a great time answering a thousand questions and tying a thousand knots.
We even caught a flounder, bream and a silver biddy, all returned to the water. With limited space, we managed a few monumental tingles – new word for big tangles. Our morning certainly proved that education doesn’t stop inside the walls of a classroom.
Tune in to Port Stephens FM each Friday morning at 9.30am for “Stinker’s Tips, Tales and Techniques.”
