Stinker's fishing column

DUSKY flathead are generally considered to be summer species, well it seems that no one has told them as there has been excellent reports of flathead biting right throughout winter.

Just ask eight-year-old Katie Head who dangled half a frozen prawn off the jetty at Soldiers Point and was nearly pulled in by a thumping 2kg flathead.

Although recent weather and sea conditions have been tough there are plenty of fish out there if you can get at them.

Outside the heads it is pleasing to report that the snapper are back on with cracker reddies up to an impressive 8.5kg being reported north of Broughton.

Champion Fingal snapper man Dave Strong bagged two fish in his first two throws anchored out of the howling wind behind King Tommy off the Outer Light.

Fishing with prawns Strongy's rod buckled under the weight of a monster fish. After an epic battle a whopping black drummer close to 4kg was hauled to the surface.

Inside the Port the bream and luderick are going nuts.

Broad-shouldered bream are muscling through the oyster racks and along the breakwalls at Nelson Bay and Corlette. Luderick are in excellent numbers along the breakwalls, off Little Beach Jetty and around the TorpedoTubes at Tomaree. Champion bream fisherman Tommy Stokes has been concentrating on luderick this season and is having a ball.

The beaches are settling down with fish cakes in big numbers taking control of Stockton, Fingal and Hawks Nest. Bream, tailor and oddly enough, a few whiting are struggling for room.

Stan Nash continues to catch bright eyed bream off Fingal.

My email is in melt down with your concerns about boat ramps and parking meters - keep them coming.
