MORE than 80 ladies turned out to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Soldiers Point Women's Bowls Club on Monday.
Women's bowls secretary Claire Teague said those in attendance on the day had a top time at the gala competition, including NSW Bowls president Jewel Lister and Newcastle District president Marg Adams.
"It's always a very special occasion when the state and district presidents come," Claire Teague said.
Since it was first affiliated in 1959, the club has grown in membership from 30 founding members to its current 114.
Teague said there had been a recent influx of new members at the club with 14 women joining in the past financial year.
She attributed the increase to retirees moving into the nearby Salamander Haven Retirement Village.
The club's longest serving member is Mildred Ball, who has been a part of the club for 42 years.
"Mildred is very coy about her age, she won't tell us but she had been with the club since 1967," Mrs Tieg said.
Over the years the club has won seven pennants, including a number five in 2006.
"The number five represented players who had been playing less than five years and that was a real thrill for them," Mrs Teague said.
The club has also won a number of district championships and the 2001 State Triples competition.
"That was the club's biggest win," Mrs Teague said.
Mrs Teague said the club also payewd a social role.
"It offers companionship, exercise and gets you out in the fresh air," she said.
"Lasting friendships are also made at the club."
The club was also important to women who may have lost a loved one.
Ella Williams, Elaine Williams, Robyn Turnbull and Kevaleen McQuinnan received honorary merit pins on the day for club service.
