NATASHA Van Eldik will become the youngest lawn bowler to represent Australia at a Commonwealth Games when she hits the Delhi greens in October.
The 19-year-old sensation had no idea she stood to gain the illustrious title until she was told by the Examiner on Tuesday, and said her appointment to the Games pairs team was also sinking in slowly.
"I got the call at 6.45 this morning...they said we would get a call whether we had made the Commonwealth Games team or not so I didn't know what to expect," she said.
"It's a bit overwhelming really.
"In 12 months I have debuted for my country, played about 14 or 15 games for Australia and now I'm going to a Commonwealth Games.
"It's a dream come true."
The Tanilba Bay teen could not be in better company as she lines up along side reigning gold medallist, 26-year-old Queenslander Lynsey Armitage.
"She has become a real mentor for me."
Armitage will lead for Van Eldik at the Games.
A silver medal with Armitage at the eight nations tournament at the Games venue in Delhi in April signalled to Australian coach Rex Johnston that Van Eldik was ready.
"[Van Eldik] is the most exciting Australian prospect unearthed during the selection campaign.
"Her bowling nous is exactly what we have been looking for in our younger recruits. Natasha, teaming with...Lynsey Armitage, will be one of the favorites for gold."
But between her and a gold medal are hours on the Australian greens.
"Now we start the really, really, really hard work," she said
"From this Friday we will go into camp and our training and fitness regimes start."
Bowls Australia will have a strip of the greens sent from Delhi for its mens and womens teams to train on and both squads will head to Cairns to acclimatise to the heat.
