SOLDIERS Point Bowling Club is to host one of the state's most prestigious competitions.
The Greater NSW State Championships will begin on Saturday and run for seven days.
The competition will include all four disciplines, singles, doubles, triples and fours, and feature the state's best competitors.
Raymond Terrace Bowling Club operations manager Jason Stokes will compete in the event and said it would be tough going competing against the best of the best.
"In the first game we are up against Commonwealth gold medalist Wayne Turley, but to compete in this is something you are always aiming for," he said.
Bowling Club president Jim Richardson said the event had only been held outside Sydney twice in the past 20 years.
"This is certainly the biggest event in terms of bowls the Newcastle area has seen in a very long time," he said.
Soldiers Point were granted the event based on the club's premier reputation and ability to put up prize money of $32,000.
The tournament will attract 64 bowlers on its opening day and a further 48 when the triples competition begins on Monday.
Mr Richardson said the event would attract a number of people to the area with between 300 and 400 spectators expected to attend the event each day.
