THE Nelson Bay Gropers new coaching regime will face a stern first test when the squad faces off against Sydney University in a trial match at Bill Strong Oval this Saturday.
The Gropers will face off against the Students in a three-way trial that will also include Newcastle University.
New head coach Michael Maher said the match was all part of a move to instill a more professional ethos at the club.
"I'd like the guys to see what a top outfit looks like, they'll be playing against some of the best players in the world," he said.
"I fully expect that it will be a tough day at the office."
The Gropers will use the match to trial several players in various positions, including some of their off-season additions.
In his first year at the helm Maher and assistant coach Ken Cooper are aiming to rebuild the club, and want to start from the ground up.
"We want to change the attitude, make things more professional and lift the skill level," Maher said.
"If we're going to be competitive in the future we need these things."
Part of that process has included hiring Cameron Dyer, a professional trainer brought in to help lift player fitness levels.
Maher also highlighted developing the Gropers juniors program as a focus.
"We've got a good juniors program, it's a good breeding ground and that's certainly something we want to promote."
The Gropers will undoubtedly gain a taste of what it is like to compete at an elite level against Australia's oldest and most successful club side.
In their most recent outing last Friday the Students defeated the nation of Samoa 35 to 12.
The trial will kick off at 5pm with a barbeque to be held afterwards.
