Triathlon converts: Morgan earns spot to represent state

10 Mar, 2010 10:45 AM
TRIATHLON was supposed to be an alternative to rugby while the Woodley brothers overcame injury or stayed fit in the off-season.

But only 12 months after the triple-sport found older brother Bryce, 15, it has become more than a pastime for the Salamander Bay pair.

Bryce and Morgan, 13, both raced in the All Schools NSW Triathlon in Penrith last month and with a chance to join the state team at next week's National All-Schools Triathlon up for grabs, neither were there to make up the numbers.

Bryce finished in a creditable eighth, painfully missing under 16 national selection by one place, while it was younger brother and late-comer to the sport Morgan who finished fourth and booked himself a ticket to the nationals.

"He has never represented his state before, this is a huge thing for him," their father Jim said.

"Bryce has only been doing it for 12 months and Morgan just took it up in the off-season to stay fit."

Both Tomaree High School students compete in the Triathlon NSW State Junior Series and train up to 25 hours a week with athletics coach Gael Sanderson and the Hunter Academy of Sport triathlon squad.
