Fingal Bay nippers turn out for intensive training

11 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
THREE days of intensive nippers training aimed at teaching young ones about surf life safety has had a huge impact at Fingal Bay Surf Lifesaving club.

Some 51 juniors aged eight through to 14 took part in the three day program, which included individual training, relay and team events.

A combination of skill, fitness and surf knowledge training using rescue boards and other surf life saving aides made the carnival the complete surf training package.

Director of surf sports at the club Mark Watson said an ironman event on day two proved very popular.

The event even attracted some uninvited, but otherwise most welcome guests.

"During the paddle [to Fingal Spit] we were joined by a pod of 30 plus dolphins who seemed to enjoy our company," Mr Watson said.

Included in the itinerary of events was a lighthouse tour and a visit to Grit Hole which included a snorkel and history lesson of the area.

"All the junior lifesavers were presented with a completion gift and a nice barbecue to end the camp," Mr Watson said.
